1864 $20 NGC XF45 CAC Ex: Kiawah collection – One of many scarce issues that were struck during the Civil War, this circulated double eagle with a mintage of 204,235 pieces for circulation. While circulation of this and similar issues remained low, many were exported and others were melted. This piece acquired some circulation wear and has thus become an interesting piece from a very important part of American history. Scarce in all grades, gold coins from this period have become increasingly more popular during the last few years, and with the sesquicentennial of the Civil War rapidly approaching this is a trend which appears to be continuing for at least some time. Stickered by CAC for exceptional quality this large gold coin is remarkably free of abrasions, with only a few minor ones found on either side.

Unlike many other circulated gold coins this piece has remained its original patina, which has turned out to be a nice orange-red tone. In the protected fields the color is a lighter yellow, and there is also some luster remaining in those area’s of the coin. The strike is strong, and despite the wear there is still a fair amount of details visible. A great and affordable example of the popular double eagle denomination struck in the American Civil War.
